Should you have to choose between your career and health?
| |
"If I stay an extra two hours at the office and skip the gym, my manager will notice my hard work and consider me for a promotion." Haven't we all thought this at some point? In many industries, long hours of sitting have become the norm, particularly impacting the middle-aged workforce with various health concerns. Over time, these can lead to significant health problems, decreased overall productivity, and even burnout. As the echoes of this year's International Yoga Day fade, it’s clear that while such events raise critical awareness, the real challenge is how we can incorporate these healthy practices into our daily routines, especially in the demanding corporate world. Many of us face the tough choice between climbing the corporate ladder and taking time for our health. But I believe that we need to shift our mindset. Taking care of our health is also a sign of dedication–to ourselves, our families, and our work. And companies need to realise that a healthy team is a productive team.
Should companies take responsibility for the health of their employees? The answer seems to be shifting towards a resounding 'yes'. Not only does a healthy employee contribute more effectively, but organisations also benefit from reduced absenteeism, higher job satisfaction and team morale, lower healthcare costs and increased employee loyalty.
In my initial days at VK Group, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of extracurricular activities and inter-team competitions that the office promoted. These activities weren’t just about having fun; they were about fostering team-spirit and well-being. This experience made me realize how critical it is for companies to support their employees' health not just through grand initiatives but through consistent, everyday actions.
How do you balance your career demands with personal well-being? What initiatives does your company employ to support employee health?

Workplace Wellness at VK Group
| |
Around the world, innovative companies are setting examples by integrating spaces and events that support both mental and physical health. For instance, Google and Zappos have set benchmarks in corporate wellness, offering everything from on-site fitness centers to mental health support. In Europe, some firms have redesigned their office spaces to include standing desks, relaxation zones, and even walking tracks to encourage movement throughout the day. At VK Group, we’ve seen firsthand the benefits of investing in employee health. Even in the hectic world of architecture and design, we host annual sports events that have become a cornerstone of our work culture. This year marked the 3rd season of the Box Cricket League and the 9th season of the Badminton Tournament, with over 150 employees participating in each event. Azhar Indikar, one of our Team Leads, shares, "We look forward to these events every year." "It's during such informal meetings that we bond with other team members, and then even office becomes a bit more fun," adds Manali, a junior architect. Recognising the risks associated with prolonged sitting, which is common in office environments, VK Group organized a Desk Mobility session on this year's International Yoga Day. The session introduced simple stretches that can be performed right at the desk. These exercises can enhance posture, ease tension, and boost mood, addressing common issues such as neck, back, and head pain that arise from long hours of sitting.
With more companies recognizing the importance of continuous health promotion, the next step is ensuring these initiatives are inclusive, sustainable, and genuinely beneficial to all employees.

Hydroceramic is a new building material that combines hydrogel and clay to cool indoor spaces. Invented by students at the Digital Matter Intelligent Constructions studio at Barcelona's Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, the material utilizes the ability of hydrogel to absorb up to 500 times its own weight in water. Hydroceramic works due to the cooling effect provided by evaporating water. By absorbing large quantities of water, the hydrogel pellets that are spread throughout the composite material expose a large surface area for evaporation to occur, which both decreases the temperature and increases the humidity of the surrounding air. In turn, the material is therefore responsive: the cooling effect is greatest when the surrounding environment is warm, but when the surrounding is cool little evaporation occurs.

Howl's Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki
Howl's Moving Castle is an animation of architecture. The setting is a blend of various styles and eras into a cohesive, dynamic story. The castle's design challenges conventional architectural principles, presenting a living, breathing entity that evolves with its occupants. It stands as a testament to the boundless possibilities of animated architecture and the power of storytelling through built environments.
